Status effects change what a character can do for a limited time. A buff helps its target, a debuff weakens it, and a control effect can interrupt movement or actions. Good combat decisions depend on reading the icon, duration, source and removal rule instead of reacting to every colored symbol in the same way.
Effect names and interactions can change between versions. Use this guide as a reading and preparation framework, then confirm the exact tooltip in the current client.
Buffs, Debuffs and Control
| Group | Typical purpose | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Buff | Increase offense, defense, movement, recovery or utility | Duration, stack rule and whether replacement is stronger |
| Debuff | Reduce a stat, add damage over time or make the target vulnerable | Source, remaining duration and cleanse eligibility |
| Control | Limit movement, targeting or skill use | Break condition, immunity window and follow-up danger |
| Protection | Absorb damage or prevent a particular effect | Capacity, duration and what consumes it |
| Resource effect | Restore or drain HP, MP or another combat resource | Tick timing, cap and interaction with rotation |
Some effects belong to more than one practical group. A skill can apply damage and control together, or grant a buff that also protects against control. Read the full description rather than relying on the label alone.
Read the Effect Bar Quickly
Prioritize four pieces of information: what the effect does, how long it lasts, whether it can stack, and whether you can remove or prevent it. Mouse over or open the detailed view outside combat so the icon becomes familiar before a difficult encounter.
When several icons appear at once, handle the effect that stops the next required action. A short damage debuff may be less urgent than a control effect that prevents you from leaving an area attack. In group content, call out effects that require help from another role instead of repeatedly pressing an incompatible removal skill.
Cleanse, Dispel and Immunity Are Different
A cleanse removes a harmful effect from an ally or yourself when the effect is eligible. A dispel removes a beneficial effect from an enemy when the skill supports that target and effect type. Immunity prevents a matching effect from being applied during its active window. Resistance improves the chance or threshold involved in avoiding certain effects but should not be treated as guaranteed immunity.
Check the skill tooltip for the number and type of effects it handles. Do not spend a long-cooldown cleanse on a harmless short debuff if a dangerous control mechanic is about to arrive. Likewise, use immunity before the application event; pressing it after control lands may not remove an existing effect.
Control Categories and Diminishing Value
Stun, knockdown, aerial restraint, fear, root, slow, silence-like restrictions and forced movement create different problems. Movement control may still allow attacks, while action control can stop the entire rotation. Bosses and players may resist or ignore particular categories, so a control-heavy build needs an alternative damage or utility plan.
Repeated control can also be less valuable when the target gains temporary protection, builds resistance, or simply becomes immune through encounter rules. Watch the combat response instead of assuming the same skill will work every time.
Build a Response Plan
- Identify the effects that cause deaths or failed mechanics in the target activity.
- Mark which effects are preventable, removable, avoidable by movement, or meant to expire naturally.
- Assign personal defensive tools before depending on a party cleanse.
- Reserve one response for the most dangerous application window.
- Test whether resistance or defensive stats solve the problem more efficiently.
- Review the plan after changing Stigmas or party composition.
The Stigma guide helps compare utility slots, and the stats guide helps avoid sacrificing core accuracy or survival for resistance that does not address the encounter.
PvE and PvP Priorities
In PvE, effects are usually tied to an encounter sequence. Learn the cast, ground marker or boss animation that applies the debuff so prevention happens before the icon appears. The PvE overview provides a preparation path for unfamiliar instances.
In PvP, the application order is less predictable. Track enemy setup buffs, keep a control break for a real commitment, and avoid stacking every defensive cooldown into one short exchange. Communication is especially important when two players might use their strongest cleanse on the same minor effect.
Common Mistakes
- Treating every negative icon as an emergency.
- Using immunity after the effect has already landed.
- Assuming resistance means complete protection.
- Overwriting a stronger party buff without checking the tooltip.
- Building a rotation around control that important targets ignore.
- Changing several Stigmas at once and losing the ability to identify what helped.
The practical goal is not to memorize every effect in the database. Learn the dangerous categories, connect each one to a response, and confirm the live tooltip whenever a patch changes the encounter or skill.
